if you weren't stuck on a fan I'd recommend the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. I'd count the lack of a CPU fan as a benefit.

mgmiller, it doesn't look like optical drive firmware is preventing detection.. I can see the drive in my /dev folder as hda, but trying to write to hda doesn't work.
The main thing that perplexes...
/dev shows there's no such thing as scd0 but there's an hda in there...
So I tried this in /etc/fstab
# /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/hda ...
