Solved the problem by restoring from a clonezilla image, now working perfectly - being a long suffering windows power-user clonezilla/ghost images became my friend years ago, got me out of hot water...
Tried gksudo nvidia-settings and still wont save xorg.conf and even sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf* to remove the config files inc. backups and then sudo nvidia-xconfig afterwards to remake the config...

Finally solved, turned pc via the mains for the night the following morning tweaked the BIOS (back to defaults etc etc) and then clean install of 9.10 inc. updates etc - must of been a gfx card/mobo...
Would resetting the BIOS to the defaults help matters (corrupt CMOS??)?
I'll try starting afresh using a clean clonezilla hdd image to see if that help matters too...
