Putting the following options under Preferences > Advanced > Options for MPlayer did the trick for me:
    Code:
    -vc ffmpeg12vdpau,ffh264vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau,

in any case, start playback with mplayer directly and specify the following should work everytime.
    -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau
I suggest to compile smplayer from svn. vdpau should work just by selecting "vdpau" as video driver in the preferences, no need to pass any parameters to mplayer.

(This is actually untested, I don't have a graphic card supported by vdpau...)

I know this is the peak of lazyness, but is there any debs or ppas for smplayer with vdpau?

smplayer 0.6.8 has just been released:

    https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/smplayer

With this version, you don't need to pass any option to mplayer, just select "vdpau" as video driver in preferences -> general -> video, smplayer will do it for you.

Note that none of the video filters will work when using vdpau.

    Does VLC have VDPAU yet?

In the meantime, he set up the nvidia-vdpau-team as PPA, that also contains files for karmic:

Re: HOWTO: Nvidia Driver + VDPAU + Smplayer +Mplayer

i think i'm doing something wrong. tried with brandon sniders ppa and also installed smplayer 0.6.8 and yet i cant find a vdpau option under options - preferences - video - output driver. i just installed nvidia-185-libvdpau and nvidia-185-libvdpau-dev with no luck. i have nvidia driver 185.18.04 installed.

You need to update mplayer too.

You can find a mplayer build compiled with vdpau support (only for intrepid and jaunty) in my ppa:
