earphone problem

hello
i have a dell dimension e520,it has an earphone jack on the front.
the sound chip is a sigmatel i am running jaunty.
my problem is i have sound from the rear output but not from the headphone jack on the front.
i have not been able to find any info on this so does anyone know how to get this to work

Am on a HP, but same issue.

(My Laptop) I had sound at the earphone jack but do not now. (9.04) It came back for a day and now has disappeared again. I have checked the "switch" check box and it is still clicked on. I do get sound just fine from the onboard speakers. The sound worked fine for a long time and then just quit working.

I had the same problem on my Sony Vaio laptop with 9.04.

With 10.04 which I have now the problem is not anymore, it works out-of-the-box over the earbuds.
