Deleting the displays.xml file worked for me.
I logged in via xterm -session and deleted the displays.xml file via text console.

I have just experienced this bug.
Desktop: I5-2500 on a Z77 MB, 16Gb memory, GTX-570
Windows-7 (trying to add Ubuntu 12.04 LTS)
I have the same problem in lucid lynx and there is no display.xml file in there. What can I do?
